Kanjivaram silk sarees have been existing for around 400 years now. Originally, these sarees come from the city of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, which is famous for its hand-woven silk sarees. According to the history, two communities of weaver - the Devangas and the Saligars, came down from Andhra Pradesh, settled in the small town of Kanchipuram and started weaving the sarees using their skills and craft. They were said to be the descendants of Sage Markanda, who is the master weaver of Gods. It is said that Sage markanda used to weave silk from lotus fibre which a favourite of Lord Vishnu. To maintain the fabric’s thickness and stiffness, the threads are first dipped in rice water and is sun-dried before use. This also helps to increase the strength and durability of the saree. The ‘pallu’ and the rest of body are, first, woven as separate entities and is later joined by using a zig-zag pattern of weaving known as ‘pitni’. These sarees are usually thick and have flattering silhouette. The speciality of Kanjivaram saree is that they feature motifs with ‘zaris’ made from gold or silver dipped silk threads.
This art of hand weaving a Kanjivaram saree has been passed down generation after generation through the years. According to history, King Rajaraja of the Chola dynasty handpicked the very first weaver of these sarees. In order to safe guard the legacy and authenticity of kanjivaram sarees, the Government of India has identified it as a Geographical Indication (GI) in the year, 2006.
