Why red saree is used for wedding?
In India, for many reasons, color red is chosen for wedding saree. There are different views on why the red color is chosen for saree, the bridal attire, amongst which some will be discussed in this blog.
Goddess Durga is of prime focus in Hindu mythology. Red color depicts her fiery image as she kills Mahishasura and establishes peace and harmony in the world. Hindu brides are asked to wear red color saree which reflects the image of Durga who is the inner strength of every Indian woman.
According to astrology, Mars is the in- charge of marriage and the color of Mars is red. Brides wear this color to signify the symbol of prosperity and fertility.
Another view is there, that is, red is the universal color of love and commitment. So this is no wonder that red will be the chosen color of girls when they dream of their wedding saree.
Red color signifies auspicious moments. So one of the most auspicious occasions for a woman is her wedding, remains incomplete without a red saree as her bridal dress. In fact, it is the most predominant color and a running theme in all Indian wedding.
The celebration for an Indian wedding usually continues for several days at a stretch. Mehendi ceremony, then the Tilak, followed by the sangeet is only the beginning of the marriage proceedings. Red sarees in different style and type make an appearance in almost all these event of celebrations.
The focus of wedding in India is definitely on the time when the groom and the bride unite as a couple on their wedding day. To dress to the occasion women in almost all parts of the country are attired in red bridal saree owing to the sacredness of red color in Hindu religion.
Mostly the banarasi silk sarees of red color are worn by a bride on her wedding day. These are handloom silk sarees with intricate zari work on it. The quality of silk fabric used for these sarees are simply unquestionable. This has a real festive look and since marriage is the most auspicious festival in a girl’s life she would surely like to drape a banarasi silk saree to celebrate her day of marriage. There are other red sarees like Kanchipuram, opada, georgette etc. which has lovely zari work are also at sometimes worn by the bride as her bridal attire.

The red color is chosen in India as a color of bridal saree. Red saree, teamed up with gold or silver color blouse and traditional jewelry will make the bride look exquisitely beautiful on her wedding day.
