Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and Vinayaka Chavithi, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival takes place in late August or early September according to the lunar cycle.

It is not very clear that when this festival of 'Ganesh Chaturthi' started but it becomes a very major public event with the sponsorship of Shivaji after Mughal-Maratha wars and later on in the 19th century the freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak revived it in his tenure.
